The Psychology Behind Behavior Change

Powered by Game-Based Training

Why Attensi is a Global Thought Leader in Behavioral Transformation

At Attensi we believe that the impact, value, and ultimately the return on investment (ROI) of corporate training is intrinsically linked to the ability to produce measurable behavior change. Learning something is in effect worthless if it’s not put into practice and applied to the real world.

This focus on behavior change is reflected in our game-based training solutions. They are built on proven psychological frameworks that drive lasting behavior change at scale, all the while being fun and engaging.

Our theoretical foundation is rooted in leading behavioral science, particularly the widely cited COM-B (1.) model of behavior change. Building on this, we developed our own Attensi Behavior Change Model (ABC-model). The model is designed specifically to leverage the unique strengths of digital, game-based training. It allows us to deliver training experiences that are more engaging, more effective, and more measurable - experiences that truly transform how people think, act, and perform at work.

From COM-B to the ABC-model

We began with the widely recognized COM-B model—a behavioral change framework with over 5,000 academic citations that identifies Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation as the three essential conditions for changing behavior.

The COM-B is a great framework for designing behavior interventions, but digital training solutions come with their own strengths and challenges. So our team of psychologists and learning designers created the Attensi Behavior Change Model (ABC-model): a streamlined framework that translates the principles of COM-B into a model that’s tailor-made for game based training and scalable corporate learning.

The ABC-model guides how we build every training experience. It focuses on three dimensions—Motivation, Knowledge, and Practice—working together to create lasting behavioral change.

Knowledge: Build Deep Understanding That Sticks

Knowledge provides the foundation for understanding what to change, why it matters, and how to do it effectively. In Attensis game based training solutions It’s experiential, driven by interaction, decision-making, and immediate feedback:

  • Interactive simulations place learners inside real-world challenges where they must apply their knowledge to make decisions.
  • Microlearning and repetition help reinforce content in small, digestible doses, spaced over time to improve retention.
  • In-the-moment feedback allows learners to adjust course immediately - helping them understand not just what was wrong, but why it matters.

By learning in this way, employees build not only theoretical understanding, but also the confidence to apply their knowledge in their day-to-day work.

Motivation: Make People Want to Change

Motivation is often the most overlooked part of learning interventions - but the most critical. Training without motivation rarely, if ever, leads to change.

In Attensis products, motivation is carefully engineered into every part of the experience. Our training solutions tap into both intrinsic and extrinsic drivers. For instance:

  • Personalized feedback and real-world alignment connect in-game decisions to actual job outcomes, helping learners see the relevance of their actions and feel accountable for applying new skills.
  • Narrative storytelling draws learners into relatable, emotionally resonant situations that reflect actual challenges from their work life. This familiarity facilitates recollection and application of knowledge and skills when similar situations arise in the real world.
  • Learner agency and meaningful choice give learners ownership over outcomes, building the confidence and motivation to apply their decisions in real-life situations.

Through this motivationally centered design, we ensure learners don’t just participate - they are immersed in the source material and want to put what they learned into practice.

Practice: Create the Opportunity to Apply Skills—Safely and Repeatedly

Behavior won’t change without practice. Attensi places significant emphasis on deliberate, contextualized practice - delivered in a way only game-based simulations can provide:

  • Learners can make mistakes without real-world consequences, turning every error into a learning opportunity.
  • Scenario-based learning replicates key workplace situations - whether it’s handling a difficult customer, making a compliance decision, or leading a team meeting.
  • Repetition is unlimited, meaning learners can return again and again until they’ve mastered the behavior.

This safe space to experiment and iterate turns knowledge into skill, and skill into consistent behavior.

A Scientific Model. A Game-Based Engine. A Global Standard.

Our ABC-model is the lens through which we build, evaluate, and refine every solution. It takes the proven science of behavior change and translates it into a format that works for today’s learners, workplaces, and challenges.

We’ve helped organizations across the globe implement this model to drive real transformation—from onboarding and compliance to leadership development and frontline performance.

The science of behavior change is well established. We’ve just built the engine to bring it to life.

Whether you're onboarding new employees, rolling out global compliance programs, or transforming leadership behavior, Attensi’s game-based solutions deliver measurable impact. Our clients include some of the world’s most recognized brands across industries like retail, healthcare, financial services, and hospitality.

We’re proud to be global pioneers in game-based behavioral change—and we’re just getting started.

The Attensi approach is grounded in science, driven by data, and proven in practice. If you're looking to upskill your workforce, drive measurable behavior change, and do it in a way people actually enjoy—we’d love to show you how.
